Dissolving the Storm
Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 7:58AM This morning, the rain, winds from the storm decided to knock out the power to my neighborhood. The only light to be had was the glow of my iPhone and some candles. As I moved through the house, I remembered once when I was a counselor heading to a group session. When I got to the group room it was dark. When I turned on the light switch, they were sitting there in the dark.
When I asked why no one bothered to turn on the light, they had no coherent explanation. I then responded, "There are times we go into the role of one who is hopeless and helpless, because somewhere our mind thinks that's the way to protect us. This is not always so."
On occasion when I'm doing a workshop or presentation on "Change," I ask the people attending, "How many of you want to find yourself? Please raise your hand." Invariably every hand in the room goes up. I then ask them to look down into their lap. I then usually say something to the effect of, "Professionally and personally, I've never known anyone including myself who has so-called found themselves. On the other hand, I've known and know many people who have decided and taken action on who they are going to be."
Circumstances can appear to dictate our situations and over take us, like a massive storm. We can sometimes feel like we've been dealt a weak hand. This is not always so. Is the glass half-empty or half-full? It depends on the mind that is looking into the moments of our life.
This morning, I'm powerless over the storm. I'm powerless that the power was out. But I'm not without options. I can manage my reactions. I "decided" to grab a shower and came into the office early. Now I am here, sharing life with you. If I had just stayed home without power and just my iPhone and candles, what then?
When the lights go out in our life, do we mirror the moment, merging with the darkness and sink or shine and become our own light and lift ourselves forward? Are we being a true friend to ourselves... Unifying our heart-mind enables us to connect with choices that are self-helping rather than self-harming? We don't have to wait for the lights to mysteriously come back on, we can make it happen.
Rather than waiting on the storms to pass, we can in dissolve them... even if just a little bit... Not in the grandiose sense, but rather in the compassionate, self-helping, self-caring, self-motivating, deeply intimate practice of the Way, befriending our self and life.
